Liturgy - Lectors

Lectors

Checklist

Schedule Receive the ministry schedule via email or US mail:
  • First person listed is Lector #1 (first Reading)
  • Second person listed is Lector #2 (second Reading)
Look for your name in the bulletin the week before
Find a replacement if you cannot serve

Request a substitute through the electronic scheduler if you have access to it.  If a reasonable amount of time passes and no one responds, start phoning other ministers.

Telephone other Lectors who typically serve at that Mass until you find a replacement

If you find a replacement, inform Kayde in the office (732-493-4411 orstanselm2@aol.com) with the replacement’s name

If you can’t find a replacement, call a Lector who is scheduled for that Mass to let them know you won’t be there

If you arrive at Mass and one or more Lectors is absent, recruit another trained Lector from the congregation to step in

Arrival time and preparation

Arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled start of Mass

Sign in with your initials on the schedule (on bulletin board)

Check the Lectionary on the Ambo to make sure it is opened to the correct readings for the week

If you arrive after the gathering prayer has taken place, assume that a replacement for you has been found and you will not be reading

Entrance processional Order for entrance procession is:
  1. Altar servers bearing the processional cross
  2. Lector #1 carrying the Book of Gospels
  3. Deacon (if present – carries Book of Gospels instead)
  4. Presider

Do not bow when you are carrying the Book of Gospels

Lector #1 places the Book of Gospels on the Ambo

Proclaiming the readings and intercessions

Use the Lector’s Workbook at home beforehand to practice the pace of readings, emphasis, punctuation, and pronunciation

If people are entering or moving around the worship area when you are about to begin, wait a moment for them to settle in their seats

Announce the Reading and pause (think about what you are about to read)

When finished reading the main body of text, pause slightly before proclaiming “the Word of the Lord”  -  Do not rush this - you are proclaiming God’s Word

Pause reverently for 10 to 15 seconds at the conclusion of the Reading before returning to your seat

Lector #1 leaves the Lectionary open

Lector #2 places the Lectionary on the Ambo shelf after the reverent pause

Lector #3 (if the Deacon or Father Gene are not present) approaches the Ambo as the “Profession of Faith” concludes and the Presider begins the Intercessory Prayer and reads the Intercessions in the binder

Exit recessional Order for exit recessional is:
  1. Altar servers bearing the processional cross
  2. Christophers (at 9am Mass only)
  3. Lector #2 carrying the Book of Gospels
  4. Deacon (if present – carries the Book of Gospels instead)
  5. Presider

Do not bow when you are carrying the Book of Gospels

Lector #2 (or Deacon) places the Book of Gospels upright on the Offertory table in foyer
